Ireland leads EU in electricity prices 

The European Union’s latest data shows that Ireland had the highest household electricity prices in the EU during the second half of 2025, with consumers paying 40.42 cents per kilowatt-hour, almost 40% above the EU average of 28.96 cents. This translates into annual household electricity bills that are approximately €480 higher than the European average. While many consumers may suspect a single cause, energy experts argue that the high cost of electricity in Ireland results from a combination of geographic, structural, and policy-related factors rather than any one issue.

One major factor is the country’s location. As an island on the western edge of Europe, Ireland faces additional costs associated with importing fuel and maintaining energy infrastructure. Although natural gas remains a critical fuel source for electricity generation, transporting that gas to the country adds costs that many mainland European nations do not face. Researchers also note that Ireland has historically experienced relatively high energy prices and that it remains an expensive environment in which to operate businesses and utilities.

A breakdown of electricity bills reveals where costs arise. According to research conducted by University College Cork, just over one-third of a typical bill reflects the actual cost of generating electricity, which is heavily influenced by wholesale energy and natural gas prices. Another 20% is related to transmitting and distributing electricity through the national network. Approximately 25% goes toward operating and balancing the electricity grid, including maintaining backup generation and integrating renewable energy supplies. Taxes and renewable energy levies account for roughly 10%, while supplier operating costs and profit margins make up the remaining 10%.

The electricity distribution network itself is unusually extensive relative to the country’s population. Experts note that the total length of distribution lines would circle the globe several times, making maintenance and delivery costs proportionally higher than in many European countries. In addition, Ireland’s dispersed rural population and prevalence of one-off housing developments increase the expense of delivering electricity to homes.

Another significant contributor is the challenge of balancing the electricity grid. Data centres consume a remarkably large share of national electricity demand, accounting for 22% of all metered electricity consumption in 2024. This proportion is exceptionally high by international standards and can create periods of intense demand that require expensive backup generation, often powered by fossil fuels. Limited electricity interconnection with neighbouring countries has further constrained the ability to import lower-cost electricity when needed, although projects such as the Celtic Interconnector with France are expected to improve this situation in the future.

The country’s energy mix also plays an important role. While renewable energy generated about 40% of electricity in 2024, nearly half still came from fossil fuels, particularly natural gas. Because gas prices have been highly volatile since 2022, this dependence has significantly increased electricity costs. Experts argue that reducing reliance on gas and expanding renewable energy generation will improve price stability over time, although renewables are not expected to produce dramatically cheaper electricity in the short term.

Debate continues over potential solutions, including greater renewable energy deployment, expanded international interconnections, and even discussions about nuclear power. However, most experts believe nuclear energy is unlikely to be economically viable for Ireland, particularly given the high costs and long development timelines associated with modern nuclear projects. Instead, improving renewable energy capacity, strengthening grid infrastructure, expanding interconnections, and supporting household solar adoption are viewed as the most practical strategies for managing future energy costs and improving long-term energy security.
