The International Energy Agency (IEA) believes that electrification should become a central pillar of Europe’s energy and industrial strategy. Speaking to Euronews, IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol argued that the continent should fully embrace what he described as the “age of electricity” by accelerating the transition from fossil fuels to electricity-powered transport, heating, and industry. According to Birol, greater electrification would strengthen energy security, improve industrial competitiveness, and reduce dependence on imported fuels.
The push for electrification comes at a particularly challenging moment for Europe. Recent geopolitical tensions, including the conflict involving Iran and disruptions to energy supply routes such as the Strait of Hormuz, have increased concerns about energy security. Since a significant share of global oil and gas passes through this strategic waterway, any disruption can quickly drive up energy prices. Rising costs have placed additional pressure on households and businesses across the EU, particularly energy-intensive industries that are already struggling with high operating expenses and increasing global competition.
To address these challenges, European policymakers have increasingly promoted technologies that rely on electricity rather than fossil fuels. These include electric vehicles, heat pumps, and electric arc furnaces that can replace traditional fossil-fuel-powered blast furnaces in heavy industry. Such measures are intended to reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels, which still account for a large portion of the EU’s energy consumption. However, the European Commission’s electrification strategy, which is expected to establish targets and policy guidance for member states and industries, has been delayed and is now scheduled for release later this year.
Despite broad support for electrification, critics argue that Europe’s infrastructure is not advancing quickly enough to support the transition. Concerns remain about insufficient electric vehicle charging networks, inadequate energy storage capacity, congestion in electricity grids, and persistently high electricity prices. Some political leaders have also expressed concern about the financial burden placed on households and businesses. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has called for greater flexibility in fiscal rules to help governments address rising energy costs and support economic competitiveness.
France has emerged as one of the strongest advocates of electrification. Benefiting from a large nuclear power fleet that provides relatively stable electricity prices, the country recently announced a comprehensive plan to reduce its dependence on imported fossil fuels from nearly 60% of energy consumption to 30% by 2035. French President Emmanuel Macron has promoted electrification as a means of strengthening purchasing power, boosting industrial competitiveness, and improving national energy sovereignty. Planned investments include expanding electric vehicle production, adding hundreds of thousands of charging stations, and supporting heat-pump adoption among lower-income households.
The IEA’s latest investment report indicates that electricity-related projects now account for nearly 60% of global energy investment, highlighting the growing importance of electrification worldwide. The report notes that the EU, alongside countries such as Japan and South Korea, has benefited from investments in renewable energy, nuclear power, energy efficiency, and electrification. These investments have improved energy security while helping reduce emissions.
Recent market trends also suggest that electrification is gaining momentum. European electric vehicle sales increased by 30% in early 2026, while heat-pump sales rose by 17%. Germany, in particular, has seen heat pumps become one of its most popular heating technologies, with sales surpassing those of gas boilers for the first time. At the same time, the IEA emphasizes that expanding electricity generation alone is not enough. Significant investment in power grids and energy storage will be essential to ensure that the EU can fully realize the benefits of an increasingly electrified economy while maintaining reliability and affordability.
