Bloomberg investing $500 million to shut down coal

Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg has announced a significant investment of $500 million in his Beyond Carbon campaign, with the aim of shutting down the remaining 150 coal plants in the United States and reducing gas usage by half by 2030. Rainforest credit schemes misleading

A report by the UC Berkeley Carbon Trading Project has concluded that rainforest conservation projects, particularly those relying on carbon offsetting, are not suitable for effectively protecting critical ecosystems like the Amazon and Congo basin. The research focused on rainforest carbon credits certified by Verra, the world’s leading carbon standard operator, and found significant issues with the system’s effectiveness.

Geothermal boom

Geothermal energy, despite its significant advantages, remains underutilized in the United States and Europe as the world shifts towards clean energy sources. In 2019, the U.S. generated only 0.4% of its power from geothermal sources, while Europe had just 1.5 GW of geothermal electricity capacity out of 209 GW. This underutilization is largely due to high drilling and production costs compared to other clean energy sources.

Offshore carbon shipping

The transportation of captured carbon dioxide (CO2) for offshore storage is becoming crucial as the push towards net-zero emissions gains momentum. Rystad Energy research predicts that by 2030, a fleet of 55 carriers will be needed to transport over 90 million tonnes per annum (tpa) of CO2, requiring 48 terminals for gas import and export.
